Common questions about overtime rates
UK law doesn't require employers to pay extra for overtime. However, your total pay (including overtime hours) must not fall below National Minimum Wage. Most employers offer 1.5x or 2x as an incentive.
This means £10/hour becomes £15/hour for overtime. Typically used for weekday overtime or hours beyond your contracted hours.
£10/hour becomes £20/hour. Common for work on Sundays, bank holidays, or unsociable hours. Check your contract for specific rates.
When calculating holiday pay, include average overtime earnings from the previous 52 weeks. This is a legal requirement as of April 2020.
Many businesses use 1.5x for weekday overtime, 2x for Saturdays, and 2.5x or 3x for Sundays and bank holidays. It depends on your employment contract.
