What employers need to know
Workers can't be forced to work more than 48 hours per week on average (calculated over 17 weeks). Employees can opt out by signing an agreement, but this must be voluntary.
UK law requires a 20-minute uninterrupted rest break if working more than 6 hours. This break doesn't have to be paid unless your contract says so.
Workers must have at least 11 consecutive hours of rest between working days. For example, finish at 11pm, can't start before 10am next day.
Workers are entitled to one full day off (24 hours) every week, or two full days off every fortnight. Employers can choose which days.
Night workers (working at least 3 hours between 11pm-6am) shouldn't work more than an average 8 hours in any 24-hour period.
