Day Rate Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about converting salary to day rate in the UK.

How do you calculate a day rate from an annual salary?
Divide the annual salary by the number of working days in the year. The standard formula is: Annual salary ÷ working days = daily rate. For a 5-day week with 52 weeks, that's 260 working days. Many employers use 228–252 working days to account for bank holidays and holiday entitlement.
How many working days are there in a year in the UK?
A standard UK working year has 260 working days (52 weeks × 5 days). After deducting 8 bank holidays, this leaves 252 working days. If you also deduct 20 days of statutory holiday (28 minus 8 bank holidays), you get 232 working days. The right figure to use depends on whether you want a gross day rate (before leave deductions) or a net rate.
What is a contractor day rate?
A contractor day rate is the daily fee a freelancer or contractor charges for their services. Unlike an employee salary, a day rate is typically quoted before tax and National Insurance — the contractor is responsible for their own tax affairs, usually through a limited company or self-assessment. Day rates in the UK typically range from £150/day for junior roles to £800+/day for senior technology or finance contractors.
Should I deduct bank holidays when calculating a day rate?
It depends on the contract. If a contractor is paid for the days they actually work, bank holidays are simply days they don't invoice — so you don't need to deduct them. If you're converting a salaried employee's annual pay to a daily rate for a specific calculation (e.g., holiday pay or notice pay), you would typically use all 260 working days as the denominator, since the salary is intended to cover the full year including bank holidays.
How do I calculate a half-day rate?
Simply divide the daily rate by 2. For example, if the daily rate is £325, the half-day rate is £162.50. Some employers charge a premium for half-day bookings (e.g., 60% of the day rate), but the standard calculation is 50%.
How does TimeTally handle day rate employees?
TimeTally lets you set each employee's pay type — hourly, daily, or salaried. Day rate employees log their working days via the app, managers approve the timesheet, and TimeTally calculates the total pay automatically. The approved pay is then included in the payroll export, ready for Xero, QuickBooks, or your chosen payroll software.
